How not to fall victim to fraudsters online?

Phishing

Online security has been a hot topic in recent years. It might seem that everyone has come across information on the subject and is aware of the dangers lurking online. Common sense and sticking to a few basic principles should be enough to ward off most risks. However, it turns out that hackers attack relentlessly, and even highly aware individuals can become victims. Criminals resort to increasingly sophisticated tricks, and their creativity knows no bounds. Therefore, one must remain vigilant at all times—especially when carrying out any financial transactions—and stay informed about emerging threats that may target unsuspecting internet users.

Phishing

It is generally known that you should not click suspicious links or open unknown attachments. But what if you receive an email from your own bank offering the opportunity to refresh the service or activate new features? Many people may be tempted to take advantage of that offer, yet it could be a classic phishing scam. That is why you must be extremely cautious when providing any data, especially related to logging in or confirming transactions. Pay close attention to the web address where the form is located. In emails from hackers, the link may appear genuine but redirect you somewhere completely different. In such cases, you should abandon the process immediately and inform the bank’s employees. Under no circumstances should you enter your details on unencrypted websites. Platforms with an SSL certificate transmit information in a form unreadable to unauthorized parties. If they do not use this technology, there is a high risk that your data could be intercepted.

Skimming

Bank cards are increasingly popular for withdrawing cash at ATMs and making payments, thanks to their convenience. Criminals, of course, have noticed this, and a major problem for cardholders—often referred to as “plastic money”—is skimming. This scam involves copying data from the card, and together with a PIN obtained through dubious methods, it can enable thieves to steal funds from the account. Therefore, when using an ATM, take a close look at the machine to check for any suspicious parts. It is also crucial to ensure safety when making payments. The best approach is not to hand your card over to a salesperson; if it is absolutely necessary, never let it out of your sight, not even for a moment.

Fake Online Stores

Online shopping is becoming increasingly popular, especially among those looking for bargains. Criminals exploit this by setting up new online stores offering electronics, footwear, cosmetics, or other attractive items, accepting orders and payments for a while, and then vanishing with the money. Caution is essential when shopping online. Above all, be extra wary of “deals” offering brand-name products at just a fraction of their usual price. If a store making such offers is newly established, does not offer cash-on-delivery or accept card payments, the chances are high that it is an attempt at fraud.

Nigerian Scam

This is another example of how criminals have perfected the art of manipulation. The scam typically begins with a message informing the recipient of an unexpected financial windfall—an inheritance from a distant relative, a foreign lottery win, or a request to help transfer funds from a war-torn country. Written in a convincing, professional tone, the email creates trust. To claim the supposed fortune, you merely need to transfer a small fee for handling or tax purposes. Of course, once the money is sent, the scammers break off contact and disappear without a trace. There are many versions of these emails, relying on human curiosity or the desire to get rich quickly. You should never respond to such messages or, worse, send money. Be extremely cautious about receiving unknown transfers into your bank account in exchange for a commission as well, since you could be accused of money laundering.
