For DV validated SSL certificates, Thawte must verify ownership of the domain for which the SSL certificate will be generated. Ownership is verified to avoid impersonating the domain owner. The domain owner’s details must match those in the WHOIS domain registry.

For OV Thawte SSL certificates, in addition to verifying the ownership of the domain, it also verifies the company/organization applying for the OV SSL certificate. Thawte checks the name of the company/organization, registration data as well as its status. These data are verified based on available databases. At the end of the verification, Thawte checks the person applying for the certificate. It is checked whether the applicant is an employee of the company/organization. In the case of speaking on behalf of the company through agencies, consultants, etc., these data can only be used as technical and billing contact. Only an employee of the company applying for the OV SSL certificate can be an administrative contact.
